Salary Negotiation

Salary negotiation is important for any career path, a common issue with internships or recent grads is however overwhelming it is to find a job after graduation and to know your worth. Since my internship has been in human resources I've done a lot of recruiting, screening resumes and have been able to sit in on some interviews. Looking at resumes has opened my eyes to all sorts of people in different stages of their career and to see their expected salaries for what they have to offer. The salary negotiation link stresses the importance of knowing your worth. You should know exactly what your skill sets are and what you can add to an organization so spending some time to really think about this is important to negotiating a salary. It’s also important to know the market value of the job position for the area that you live in, obviously some cities are going to be much higher or lower so it’s vital to take a lot of time researching where your place is compared to the average where you live. Going into a salary negotiation and knowing the facts and statistics will give you more of an edge than going in blindly. You know your worth and you know the average so if an organization cannot meet your salary, compensation and benefits expectations then you need to consider moving to another organization or reassessing if you’re going to be happy staying if you’re feeling underappreciated and underpaid. Salary negotiation also takes time, I took a conflict and negotiation class last semester and Dr. Alberts spoke to us in detail about the importance of negotiation so that you don't feel like you’re settling for anything but she also told us how it’s taken her years of practice and a lot of rejection to get to the point that she’s at now so I think the final thing to take from this is to not fear rejection because odds are you wont get it your first time around but that is absolutely not grounds to give up.
