Red Flags

When searching for an internship I definitely came across a few red flags. Interning is tricky as I feel that some employers feel that they can take advantage of the intern being naive which is why I’m really happy I did my internship through ASU and not independently for work experience as it adds a layer of safety and protection. The main thing that I noticed with internship postings was that the job description was either not in depth enough or it seemed like very clerical work and not anything to do with the actual position. When interning you want to learn about the actual position and get a feel for what a career would be like in this field, and not doing reception or office work to help them out. I also noticed some internship postings that had spelling mistakes and the wording didn't really make sense. This made me feel that it wasn't a well thought out posting and made the organizations seem unprofessional. I looked into one posting that had a great job description and made the internship seem extremely fulfilling however I could not find any information about the company and when I contacted them they told me to schedule an interview and then they would tell me more about the company, this made me feel uncomfortable as it seemed like they knew exactly what to say to lure people in but had no actual plan for the internship or clear descriptions of the organization. Overall I’m really pleased that I saw these red flags and did not give any of these postings or organizations any additional time especially not going to interview with any of these companies. I have been extremely happy and fulfilled with the organization I chose to intern with and feel that they blew away my expectations with how fun and in depth an internship could be.
