My Resume

Resumes can be extremely stressful, the fate of our future depends on how we look on this one piece of paper. My previous positions have both been serving jobs, one of which I've been with for 7 years and the other one I was only with for a few months. The positions were both fairly similar however one was open morning and evening and the other was just open for fine dining evening service an addition to one being italian and one being a steakhouse. When writing about these positions I wasnt too sure what to say, I initially felt like my experience there wouldnt matter in the real world but I stopped selling myself short, longetivity, hospitality and customer service are definitely great skills that can be applied to jobs other than restaurants. In terms of my experience in different careers, this internship was the first time that I've done something other than serving and I was worried that my resume would hold me back. Everywhere wants you to have experience but finding that first person to give you experience can be difficult. My internship position is in human resources recruiting so everyday I look at people's resumes, screen them, call them and get to meet them in person. I really enjoy the process but it’s also been interesting to see such a large variety of resumes as I now feel that I have a better understanding of how to create a resume that really stands out. A well organized resume, possibly with colour is incredibly pleasing to look at and easy to screen. Resumes with self portraits on are extremely eye catching and it’s nice to be able to put a face to the name and the resume. I created my current resume when applying for internships, I wanted to add some colour in and used an online website to help create it which was incredibly helpful. I felt strange talking about myself or even describing my past job descriptions because there wasn't much to do besides serving. However, after doing this exercise and screening resumes over the last few weeks I’ve realised that it’s important and ok to speak highly of yourself, and even if you haven't had that many positions or you dont think they’re relevant, there's something to learn within the job and yourself for every position.
